In this day and age it's really more a matter of what each individual is comfortable with. A long time ago turning a computer on and off could cause power spikes, and the 'heat - cool' cycle could hasten the failure of some components. While some still think that's true, modern manufacturing techniques have pretty much put that behind us now. Turning a system on and off doesn't impact it the way it use too. I have systems that are 3 and 4 years old and get turned on and off several times a day, everyday, with no problems at all....
Having said all that, you're probably going to get a 'lot' of conflicting advice on this one.......

As we approach the season, don't leave it on when there is any chance of thunderstorms in your area. I shut mine off every night and anytime I will be away more than 2 or 3 hours.
I think with Windows ME, it might be better to shut down the computer at night. This will help create restore points, if you ever have to find a date that the computer ran correctly. Also, ME seems to slow down a little over time, if not shut down.
